How to Count Words and Characters in Any Text
By Tool Studio Team · 2026-06-02
A practical guide to counting words, characters and reading time — and why these numbers matter for essays, SEO and social posts.
Word and character counts show up everywhere — university essays with strict limits, tweets capped at 280 characters, and meta descriptions that get truncated in Google. Knowing your numbers helps you write to fit.
Words vs characters: what's the difference?
A word count splits your text on spaces, while a character count measures every single letter, number, space and symbol. Most platforms limit one or the other, so it helps to see both at once.
- Words — good for essays, articles and blog length
- Characters (with spaces) — used by Twitter/X and SMS
- Characters (no spaces) — sometimes required by forms
- Sentences & paragraphs — useful for readability
How reading time is estimated
A common estimate is about 225 words per minute for silent reading and roughly 130 for speaking aloud. So a 900-word article takes ~4 minutes to read — handy for setting reader expectations.
Tip: Aim for meta descriptions around 150–160 characters and title tags under 60 so they don't get cut off in search results.
