How to Format and Validate JSON (Without the Headaches)
By Tool Studio Team · 2026-06-05
Beautify messy JSON, catch syntax errors fast, and understand the rules that trip people up — with a free browser-based formatter.
JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is the lingua franca of APIs and config files. It's simple — until a missing comma breaks everything. This guide covers formatting, validating and the rules that cause most errors.
The rules that catch people out
- Keys must be wrapped in double quotes (not single quotes)
- No trailing comma after the last item
- Strings use double quotes; numbers, true/false and null are unquoted
- Brackets and braces must be balanced
Beautify vs minify
Beautifying adds indentation and line breaks so JSON is readable for humans. Minifying strips all whitespace to make the smallest possible payload for production. You'll want both at different times.
Validating quickly
A validator parses your JSON and reports the exact position of the first error. Fix that error, re-run, and repeat — most broken JSON is one or two small mistakes.
Tip: If you're copying JSON from logs, watch for smart quotes (“ ”) — replace them with straight double quotes (") before parsing.
Format JSON safely in your browser
Tool Studio's JSON Formatter beautifies, minifies and validates JSON entirely on your device, with clear, friendly error messages — nothing is sent to a server.
