JPG vs PNG vs WebP: Which Image Format Should You Use?
By Tool Studio Team · 2026-06-08
A no-nonsense comparison of the three most common web image formats — and how to convert between them privately in your browser.
Choosing the right image format keeps your pages fast and your images sharp. Here's when to reach for each of the big three.
JPG — photos and gradients
JPG uses lossy compression that's great for photographs and complex color. It doesn't support transparency, and heavy compression can create visible artefacts, so keep quality reasonable.
PNG — sharp graphics and transparency
PNG is lossless and supports transparency, making it ideal for logos, icons, screenshots and anything with crisp edges or text. The trade-off is larger file sizes for photos.
WebP — the modern all-rounder
WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression plus transparency, and typically produces smaller files than JPG or PNG at similar quality. It's supported by all modern browsers.
- Photo, small size → JPG or WebP
- Logo/icon/transparency → PNG or WebP
- Best size-to-quality overall → WebP
Tip: Convert and compress images locally so your files never leave your device — important for private or client work.
